Special Education Building Coordinator

Our department believes that we should provide structures of support for our special education teachers and providers so that everyone is feeling successful in meeting our students' needs. We have a great department here in MSAD 52 and we are looking for dedicated leaders to be a part of our team.

Provide special education leadership and supervision at the school level to ensure compliance with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations in our commitment of Free

Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to students with disabilities in being educated within their Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

Essential Requirements: 

  • Five years Special Education Teaching experience with two years educational; experience in MSAD 52 (waived if necessary);
  • Master’s Degree preferred;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Maine Unified Special Education Regulations (MUSER); 
  • Experience in consulting regarding special education with teachers, providers, and families;
  • Ability to provide training to staff in areas of special education; 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to consult effectively and harmoniously with teachers, administrators, parents, and community providers in a variety of settings; 
  • Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to all aspects of the position.

Essential Responsibilities: 

  • Provides guidance, support and oversight of the Child Find process to the initial provision of services for the school.
  • Complete academic evaluations and classroom observations for students in theinitial referral and triennial process for special education.
  • Attends Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings in the role of administrative designee, as needed, apprising building administration and Director of situations, as needed.
  • Assists IEP teams in developing instructional techniques including appropriate strategies, interventions, collaboration, accommodations, and modifications to curriculum to support instruction within the students least restrictive environment (LRE).
  • Reviews, provides feedback, and approves IEP and related paperwork for special education teachers and service providers ensuring that the forms are completed in compliance with the State regulations with accuracy.
  • Oversees and maintains tracking systems to ensure compliance with State regulation timelines in meeting our Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) obligations.
  • Supports the Child Development Services (CDS) transition process to public schools for incoming 4 and 5 year olds and completes case management responsibilities as necessary in accordance with the State regulations ensuring our FAPE obligations.
  • Collaborates, when appropriate, with the Guidance Department and other school leaders to develop schedules for special education teachers and students receiving special education services.
  • Supports the transition planning for students to the next grade level, including plans for post-secondary transition.
  • Participates in building leadership and intervention meetings providing special education knowledge and expertise, along with leading school based special education department meetings, providing district level information, staff support, and training.
  • Collaborates with the Special Education Director and Assistant Special Education Director to plan and/or provide professional development to all special education staff in relation to state compliance standards and student programming needs.
