Description

The Westbrook School Department is seeking a skilled and experienced Bus Mechanic to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our school bus fleet. As a Bus Mechanic, you will play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of our transportation system, ensuring the safety of our students, and contributing to the smooth operation of our diverse school district.

Responsibilities:

  1. Vehicle Maintenance:  Perform routine maintenance and repair tasks on school buses, including engine repairs, brake system inspections, electrical system diagnostics, and HVAC system maintenance.  Perform bi-annual state inspection for all buses/vans.
  2. Safety Compliance: Ensure that all school buses meet or exceed safety standards and regulations established by local, state, and federal authorities. Conduct regular safety inspections and implement necessary repairs.
  3. Diagnosis and Troubleshooting: Diagnose complex mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic equipment and tools. Develop effective repair strategies and solutions.
  4. Preventive Maintenance: Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program to ensure the longevity and reliability of school buses. Schedule and perform regular maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks.\
  5. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed on each school bus. Keep detailed logs of parts and materials used, as well as maintenance schedules.
  6. Parts Management: Manage inventory of replacement parts and supplies, ensuring that the necessary components are available for repairs and maintenance.
  7. Emergency Repairs: Respond to emergency repair requests promptly, especially during the school year, to minimize disruptions to the transportation schedule.
  1. Collaboration: Work closely with other members of the transportation team, including bus drivers and the transportation director, to address concerns and provide support as needed.
  1. Safety Training: Assist in the development and implementation of safety training programs for bus drivers and staff, focusing on vehicle safety protocols.

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel mechanics preferred.
  2. Proven experience as a bus mechanic or in a similar role, preferably in a school district or transportation company.
  3. ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification or similar certifications preferred.
  4. Hold or be willing to Maine State Inspection License for Class A, B, D, E & T
  5. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and air brake systems.
  6. Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
  7. Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  9. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  10. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  11. Hold or be willing to obtain bus driver licensure within one year of employment
  12. Willingness to comply with background checks and drug testing as required by the school department.
