SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER - Functional Life Skills Classroom at MMS
Position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found
POSITION SUMMARY: To provide special education services to students so they may receive their education in the least restrictive, educational setting with access to the general curriculum.
REPORTS TO: Director and Assistant Director of Special Education & Building Administrators
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current Maine Teacher Certification appropriate for grade level and specialty area
- Bachelor’s Degree or advanced degree
- Prior teaching experience preferred
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides diagnostic and evaluative services to assist in identification of students requiring special education services. This includes classroom observations, administration of appropriate evaluation instruments, diagnostic teaching and student/staff/parent interviews.
- Develops and implements appropriate Individualized Education Plans for each identified student. This includes direct instruction, consultation, and monitoring.
- Maintains required records. This includes daily lesson plans, evaluation reports, IEP’s, transition plans as appropriate, behavior charts, and other IEP team meeting records. This also includes keeping IEP files up to date.
- Provides supportive and consultative services to all staff involved with identified students. This includes assisting teachers in implementing behavior plans and making modifications and accommodations in their classrooms.
- Provides supportive and consultative services to parents of identified students.
- Participates in student teams, special services staff meetings (building and district level), IEP meetings, and other meetings as requested by the Director of Special Services. This includes chairing IEP team meetings and student team meetings and following all required procedures when necessary.
- When appropriate, provides case management services, collaborating with consultants, agency representatives, counselors and others to provide appropriate services to identified students and facilitate communication with other staff and parents.
- Submits a yearly budget and maintains an updated inventory.
- Keeps up to date on changes in special education regulations, assessment techniques, materials, instructional strategies, theories, assistive technology, district curriculum and local resources.
- Assists in supervision/evaluation of Educational Technicians as appropriate.
- Participates in building staff meetings and shares in assigned building duties as requested by the building principal.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary, work year, and working conditions to be established by the RSU 57 School Board.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation.
