Primary Purpose
Under the direct supervision of a School Principal, to assist administrators, teachers, parents and students in resolving student attendance, behavioral and disciplinary problems in a consistent manner.

Old Orchard Beach High School

POSITION TYPE AND STATUS:
Old Orchard Beach High School is a 200 student school within RSU 23 seeking a full time Dean Of Students to join our faculty. The position is part of the RSU 23 Education Association’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Dean position is a great opportunity for the right candidate who seeks to one day become a school administrator. This position will work closely with students, families, administration, student support services team, as well as with teachers to help students meet their full potential.

Located a ½ mile from the Atlantic Ocean and 15 minutes from Portland, Old Orchard Beach High School is in an ideal location in southern Maine. The position is flexible enough to allow for any State of Maine educational certification, however those with a current administrative certification, or working towards administrative certification is preferred.
The successful candidate will work alongside administration and school staff to address student behavior through both intervention and restorative practices and should possess the following:

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's and Master’s Degree at an accredited college or university.
  • Successful experience working with children at risk.
  • Successful experience developing and implementing professional development programs relating to non-academic student behavioral issues preferred.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Maine State Certification as a teacher/school counselor, or administrator, an 040 or 045 certification is preferred, but others are welcome to apply.
  • Valid Driver's License
QUALIFICATIONS / JOB SUMMARY:
  • Assist in creating a positive school environment conducive to teaching and learning.
  • Work closely with school staff to support student attendance, positive behavior, discipline, well-being, and social-emotional health leading to academic success.
  • Have knowledge of school discipline policies, intervention, and restorative practices.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of school attendance policies and procedures as well as monitor and support student attendance.
  • Willingness to take initiative while being receptive to feedback.
  • Display interest in supporting a positive culture and climate at Old Orchard Beach High School.
  • Ability to be flexible, along with having a high level of comfort with ambiguity and a variable day to day schedule.
  • Effective communicator of oral and written information.
  • Assist teachers, parents and students in resolving non-academic student issues in the school.
  • Maintains records of any student disciplinary actions taken in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, and District policies.
  • Assume responsibility for the supervision and discipline of students under the authority of the Principal and in accordance with district policy.
  • Liaison with parents, the school, and community and support organizations as it relates to attendance, behavior, and disciplinary issues.
  • Serve as a resource to staff in addressing classroom management issues and student discipline.
  • Assist in developing and implementing behavior expectations, plans, and interventions for students.
  • Perform Bus, drop-off, pickup, recess, and lunch duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of instructional practices, with a focus of best practices for 9th-12th grade instruction.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student discipline, bullying, sexual harassment, etc.
  • Knowledge of student behavior management techniques.
  • Knowledge of dispute resolution techniques and ability to engage in dispute resolution.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AS ASSIGNED BY PRINCIPAL:
  • Track and analyze student behavior and attendance data.
  • Provide resources for teachers around Tier 1 and tier 2 behavioral and SEL Interventions.
  • Utilize a combination of pull-out and push-in models to allow for optimal student success.
  • Conduct home visits as needed with others to support attendance.
  • Provide resources to parents through a variety of modalities to include websites, brochures, meetings, and more.
  • Work in standard office and school building environments.
  • Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and telephone.
  • Travel to school district buildings as required.
  • All other tasks assigned by the Principal.
