Inquiry leads learning at Baxter Academy for Technology and Science, a public charter high school free to Maine students. Our project-based STEM curriculum emphasizes real-world problem solving and is paired with a humanities program that connects ideas across disciplines and cultivates strong communication skills. Students design innovative projects through Flex Friday, a unique program requiring initiative, perseverance, and collaboration, as well as reflection on the work and its impact in the community.
Baxter Academy is entering its seventh school year. It is located in Maine’s largest and most diverse city and serves 415 students from 66 Maine towns, many rural. Baxter Academy’s academic program is real-world, technology-rich, student-centered, and project-based. These touchstones ground the learning community as it strives to use the dynamic tension inherent in its model to do stronger work: Baxter must, according to its charter contract, provide an excellent, rigorous STEM education, and as a public charter school, it must do the great social good of meeting the needs of any student who enrolls. To maximize the potential for this dynamic tension to be a driver for innovation, school leaders must hold the space for different pedagogies; differences in teaching create the opportunity for different kinds of learners to be reached, inspired, and assisted in meeting their varying goals
The Dean of Students will report to and work closely with the Head of School, who reports to the Executive Director. Always measuring against mission, the Dean of Students will implement the school’s behavior policy, incorporating Restorative Justice practices; will oversee professional development for staff that aligns with mission and with needs arising from the behavior policy; will utilize a Response-to-Intervention model to ensure success for all students; will support the implementation of a school-wide advisory program; will continue to implement Baxter Academy’s school safety and crisis plans as identified by the Head of School; will guide state testing requirements and will identify and attend to all state and federal compliance measures.
