JOB DESCRIPTION

SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER/CASE MANAGER

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree 
  2. Able to perform all assigned physical duties.
  3. Interested in children.
  4. Able to maintain confidentiality as outlined by FERPA.
  5. Have solid language skills and be able to follow directives.
  6. Must hold certification of Teacher of Students with Disabilities Endorsement K-8 (282) in the State of Maine and have current fingerprinting authorization.

REPORTS TO:    Special Education Director

JOB GOAL: To work under the direction of the Special Education Director to ensure the education of students in a manner consistent with Milford School Department’s vision, goals and state level requirements and laws that apply to the education of IEP identified students.  To be highly proficient and professional in all aspects of the job.   

SPECIFIC SKILLS:

  1. Experience working in a program with children with disabilities preferred
  2. Ability to co-teach with other educators as needed
  3. Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  4. Other qualifications as the Director of Special Services may find appropriate and acceptable
  5. Current State of Maine Criminal History Records Check Certification (CHRC)
  6. Ability to read, reason, and understand policies, procedures and related information; and to independently follow verbal, written, and/or demonstrated instructions.
  7. Ability to talk, hear, see, speak, and correctly perceive.
  8. Ability to reach, lift, keyboard, do basic math, write, use eye-hand coordination, sit, dial, stoop and climb.
  9. Ability to concentrate on details when there are distractions and to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  10. Ability to utilize software systems employed by the district.
  11. Ability to effectively communicate, problem solve, and organize.
  12. Ability to demonstrate professional behavior at all times.
  13. Ability to be detail oriented, have strong organizational skills as well as the ability to handle multiple projects professionally.
  14. Must be team oriented with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  15. Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information as required by law.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain confidentiality of students and families at all times.
  2. Introduce new learning preplanned in collaboration with the classroom teacher or appropriate content specialist.
  3. Supervise small groups of students in community-based programs.
  4. Perform short-term instruction in small classes or in community-based programs with indirect supervision.
  5. Meet with the classroom/program teacher or appropriate content specialist and receive direction on a regular basis, whenever possible on a daily basis.
  6. Perform short-term instruction in small groups under the direct supervision of the teacher or appropriate content specialist in the classroom.
  7. Conduct one-on-one or small group instruction with indirect supervision.
  8. Read and know assigned students’ Individual Education Plans and be fluent with their accommodations and goals.
  9. Gather and maintain data as directed.
  10. Review and reinforce learning previously introduced by the classroom teacher or appropriate content specialist, or assist in drill or practice activities.
  11. Perform non-instructional, non-evaluative functions.
  12. Assist in the preparation, organization and storing of instructional materials.
  13. Provide classroom management functions as directed by supervisor(s).
  14. Perform instructional duties that are directly supervised by the classroom teacher or appropriate content specialist in the classroom.
  15. Serve under general administrative supervision when performing non-instructional student-related duties.
  16. Provide services to more than five children at any one time.
  17. Provide personal care for assigned students, such as diaper changing, toileting, feeding, cleaning, dressing, etc.
  18. Accompany students as they move about the school facility, maintaining appropriate distance and interactions to facilitate maximum independence of students.
  19. Monitor and document student behavior. Complete incident forms as per school protocol.
  20. Encourage students to set and maintain acceptable standards of school behavior. Supervise students on all school property and while on school-sponsored field trips.
  21. Maintain records as directed.
  22. Conform with Milford School Department policies and procedures. Share in total school responsibility.
  23. Attend and participate in faculty, school and department meetings as appropriate. Follow all directives in a professional, timely and accurate manner.
  24. Maintain current certification. If certification issues arise, notify Human Resource staff immediately.
  25. Be open to suggestions for improvement from those in authority and demonstrate improvement in those areas.
  26. Establish an attitude of mutual respect and tolerance with students, parents, staff and administration.
  27. Strive to create a favorable impact on students, parents, and other employees during the school day and school related functions. This includes grooming, dress, language and behavior.
  28. Speak clearly and use correct English. Language must be at the appropriate levels for the students being taught.
  29. Continually work on own professional development to increase his/her knowledge of the assigned duties and responsibilities.
  30. Keep abreast of Milford School Department’s goals and directives.
  31. Perform other duties consistent with this position as requested by the administration and assigned supervisor.

EVALUATION: 

Evaluation will be conducted annually by the Special Education Director
