2026-27 Special Education Teacher 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in special education
  • Have or be eligible for a valid Maine teaching certification with 282 Teacher of Students with Disabilities (02-GRADES K-8) endorsement
  • Deep understanding of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate practices
  • Knowledge of special education laws, IEP development, and compliance
  • Strong collaboration skills with families and multidisciplinary teams
  • Patient, compassionate, and creative approach to teaching young children with diverse needs
  • Preferred: Pre-K special education experience, training in ABA/PBIS, knowledge of assistive technology
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports To: Building Principals and Director of Special Services

Oversees: Special Education Educational Technicians

Job Goal:

  • Create a nurturing, developmentally appropriate classroom where young learners with special needs can explore, play, and grow
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) using evidence-based practices and hands-on learning
  • Collaborate with families, related service providers (OT, PT, speech), and specialists to provide comprehensive support
  • Conduct assessments, monitor progress, and celebrate each child's unique achievements
  • Lead IEP meetings with empathy, ensuring families feel heard and empowered
