Job Environment

  • Work is performed within a public elementary school environment in both special and general education classrooms.  

  • Home visits may be necessary to ensure consistency of programming and carryover.

  • Coordination and communication with school and home.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, facilitate and supervise curriculum and specialized programming and support services in compliance with federal and state requirements for students with disabilities in grades K-8.

  • Provide specialized instruction to meet unique needs of individuals with disabilities.

  • Plan curriculum, lessons, and special education programs/interventions.

  • Implement and provide consultation on effective instructional strategies and curriculum that aligned with the Maine Learning Standards as modified to meet the individual needs of children and instructional requirements of the Individualized Educational Programs

  • Evaluate and observe students as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Data collection, progress monitoring, and general education program modification

  • Collect and analyze data from various sources including, formal and informal assessments, observations, performance evaluations, and teacher reports.

  • Maintain an integrated therapies model of intensive instruction and support that provides follow through for occupational, physical, and speech/language therapy services, as well as assistive technology (including augmentative communication) and other related services required for individual children to progress effectively.

  • Provide appropriate direction to the teaching team for the facilitation of inclusion

  • Maintain regular contact with parents of students as needed and/or as determined by IEP

  • Promote inclusive practice across grade levels while supporting and consulting with classroom teachers, therapists, educational technicians, administrators and families.

  • Model for staff and students the cooperative process and focus on student strengths, learning style, peers as role models, and positive student achievement at individual ability levels.  

  • Facilitate the positive transition, placement and curriculum planning for students with special needs into general education classrooms activities.  

  • Schedule, plan and oversee student support in inclusive settings.

  • Participate in IEP Team meetings, parent conferences, and case management staffing, and transitional meetings as requested.  

  • Perform any other tasks/duties required or requested that is related to maintaining services and student records in compliance with Federal and state law, regulation, and policy.

Education and Experience

Maine License Special Education Teacher - 282E (Required)

Special education teaching experience with students with disabilities (public school setting preferred -- private or collaborative experience will apply)

Experience working in consultation/training role preferred

Knowledge, Ability, and Skills

  • Knowledge of various specialized instruction techniques, strategies, and materials

  • Experience with curriculum accommodations and modifications

  • Knowledge of services provided by or available from other agencies

  • Knowledge of source and operation of orthotic devices, medical technologies and computer-moderated prosthetic devices and adaptive design

  • Working knowledge of behavior management techniques and the ability to participate in the development of behavior management plans.

  • Superior interpersonal skills with parents and staff.

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with classroom teachers.

  • Experience assisting students in inclusion/mainstream models.
