Adult Education Instructor at the Androscoggin County Jail
Reports to: Director of Adult Education and the Assistant Director of Adult Education
This is a professional teaching position for up to 16 hours a week, year-round. This position serves as the lead teacher for HiSET preparation at the Androscoggin County Jail. Primary responsibilities include instruction in basic reading, writing, math, science and social studies. This position refers individuals for final testing at the adult learning center. Previous experience with adult learners is preferred; experience with incarcerated individuals and re-integration planning is also preferred.
Rate of Pay: $32.14/hr (This position is intermittent, part-time and non-benefits eligible. This position is considered a contracted service and is contingent upon receipt of funding to be determined annually.)
Experience and Training:
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
Teaching certification (adult or 9-12) in one of the core subject areas required (Math, English or Science preferred)
Responsibilities at ACJ:
Coordinate instructional time with program officer and jail staff
Assess student needs and develop individual learning plans
Provide instruction in ABE and HiSET preparation
Advising
Arrange for HiSET testing with learners
Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, demographics, intakes, and assessments
Maintain a good working relationship with jail staff
Participate in the state corrections education network

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
Proficient in digital literacy and online teaching
Work Ready certification preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Teaching certification (adult or 9-12) in one of the core subject areas (Math, English or Science preferred)
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals and groups.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule for
