POSITION OVERVIEW

Title 1 is a federal program that provides funding to eligible schools for early intervention services for their students. The goal is to assist children who have fallen slightly behind in reaching grade-level proficiency in reading, writing and/or math. Title 1 teacher supports students one-on-one as well as runs small group lessons and supports teachers in the classroom. Title 1 is not Special Education services, although children with special education needs may be served by Title 1.

HOURS/WEEK and SCHEDULE

The Title 1 position at SAU is approximately 15 hours/week throughout the academic year. A schedule will be created so that the Title 1 teacher is able to meet with students during pre-agreed upon hours. The hours could include regular school hours as well as before or after school with individual students in some cases.

START DATE

Sept. 5, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter

REMUNERATION

Compensation will be determined based on teacher’s experience. Because it is a part-time position, no additional benefits are offered.

REQUIREMENTS

Maine Title 1A teachers need to be fully certified with a K-8 endorsement.

TITLE 1 REPORTS TO : RSU-21

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Individual tutoring in the areas of reading, writing and/or math. The Title 1 teacher works with the teachers and families to determine the needs of the child and what approach will be best for the child’s success.

2. Small class support for small groups of children in the areas of language arts and/or mathematics, working closely with the peer group teacher to plan and implement an appropriate program for the children.

3. Teacher Support: Working in collaboration with the teachers to cultivate a positive learning environment, providing support to teachers as needed.

4. Assessment and Parent Communication with the family of the child receiving services. This includes updates on progress and narrative reports to families twice/year.

5. Meet with RSU-21 contact that oversees the program on an occasional basis.

6. Federal Grant Accountability, reporting to the public school district as determined by the principal of Mildred L. Day Elementary School. The Title 1 teacher is required to test students and to provide information regarding the initial assessment, demographics, description of the areas of deficit, the strategies used, and final assessment for each child. The names of the students are kept confidential.
