For academic year 2024-2025, Lee Academy is seeking a Social Studies and History teacher for a range of high school courses which include Human Geography, Civics, US History and other courses built around teacher expertise, and the interests and needs of students. This position is full-time, serving grades 9-13 (Lee Academy has a post-graduate program whose students enroll in the day-school courses.)
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, student focused, culturally sensitive, and able to facilitate a classroom environment where everyone is respected. The successful applicant will be capable of developing and delivering lessons which are engaging, rigorous, and focused on the essential skills and knowledge of history and social studies, as well as the development of active, informed citizens.
Lee Academy, founded in 1845, is a private New England Town Academy with 100+ local and regional students, and 30-40 boarding students from the US and around the world.
Job Description:
- Designing, teaching, and assessing units and lessons with clear learning targets which involve deep understanding, critical thinking and practical applications in the social sciences and history
- Collaborating with a dedicated, collegial, quality faculty to pursue and support active teaching and learning
- Opportunities to serve as coach or assistant for an athletic teams or clubs, as needed,
- Communicating with parents and community to support student learning in a relationship-based, supportive school community,
- Managing student achievement data and delivering lessons and assessments using technology
Requirements:
- Experience successfully teaching social studies and history, and a current State of Maine certification, are preferred but not required; willingness to obtain certification in a timely manner is expected,
- Enthusiasm for working with high school students from various cultures,
- Knowledge of the processes and content of any of the following is helpful, but not required: Maine Learning Results, Habits of Mind, and Understanding By Design
