Immediate Opening for a Teacher – 7/8 Social Studies 

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE:

 To create a flexible 7/8 middle school social studies program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed for a high-quality middle grades education, in accordance with each student’s ability and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teaches the approved curriculum that is adopted by the School Board.
• Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and uses various approaches to teaching to meet the needs of each student.
• Utilizes available instructional time effectively.
• Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports in a standards-based system.
• Identifies student needs and effectively collaborates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
• Assists in the development of IEPs/504s and acts as teacher representative at meetings when necessary.
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom and that are in line with school wide behavior expectations.
• Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning, good health, and safety.
• Communicates regularly with parents to discuss student’s progress and interpret the school program.
• Uses technology effectively.
• Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
• Assists in selection of instructional materials and supplies.
• Administers district and state assessments in accordance with testing policies.
• Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
• Analyzes and uses data to inform instruction.
• Maintains up-to-date certifications.
• Participates in team meetings and activities.
• Performs duties as assigned.
• Ability to stand & sit for prolonged times and lift 30lbs or more

QUALIFICATIONS and LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

• Highly qualified in content area.
• Maine State Certification.
• Bachelor’s Degree.
• Must meet Maine State Fingerprinting requirement.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
