MAINE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVE DISTRICT NO. 3
  
TITLE: School Custodian (Walker)
REPORTS TO: Lead Custodian and Operations Director. (Building principals may also direct the activities of custodians in special circumstances.)
JOB GOALS: To assure that the district buildings and grounds are in the best possible condition, and to provide necessary services conducive to the efficient conduct of the education program and public functions. These services include but are not limited to cleaning, lighting, heating, snow removal, care of lawns and grounds, moving school furniture and general custodial care.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Physically able to perform required responsibilities
2. Demonstrate desirable working relations, work habits and personal hygiene
3. Willing to work overtime as required
4. Demonstrate knowledge of proper usage of custodial products and equipment
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Ability to read, reason and understand policies, procedures and related information and to follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
2. Physical ability to perform all necessary upper and lower body movements
3. Ability to talk, hear, see, smell, speak and correctly perceive.
4. Ability to do simple calculations, divide, multiply, addition, counting and subtraction
5. Ability to use basic hand tools and equipment and abilities to
6. Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: (May vary according to building assignment.)
1. Complete required training
2. Maintains accurate record of hours worked.
3. Supervises all property in his/her charge.
4. Assures that area of assignment is neat, clean, comfortable and ventilated at all times
5. Makes minor repairs consistent with his/her abilities.
6. Inspects building daily and reports additional repairs needed.
7. Checks fuel inventory (except Mount View) and reports if low.
8. Displays flag properly.
9. Notifies supervisor in case of absence necessitated by illness or other emergency.
10. Adheres to District safety rules, reports unsafe conditions to supervisor.
11. Sweeps and dust mops hard surface floors. Also washes, waxes, strips, and power polishes tile floors and applies preservatives.
12. Vacuums and shampoos carpeted floors.
13. Cleans foot mats and runners.
14. Cleans entrances.
15. Cleans and disinfects bathroom floors and fixtures.
16. Replenishes supplies of toilet paper, paper towels, soap, deodorant and other consumables.
17. Locks and unlocks building; maintains security when building is not in use.
18. Checks boiler rooms and heating system periodically.
19. Arranges desks moves furniture.
20. Cleans walls, desks, and bathroom stalls of pencil marks and graffiti.
21. Cleans drinking fountains.
22. Empties pencil sharpeners and wastebaskets.
23. Disposes of rubbish and other waste.
24. Gathers recycled materials for transport to recycling center.
25. Cleans chalkboards, erasers and chalk trays.
26. Replaces burned out light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
27. Washes lighting fixtures.
28. Paints inside and outside of structures as needed.
29. Checks and initials fire extinguishers and emergency lighting monthly.
30. Dusts shelves, pictures, woodwork, lockers, etc.
31. Shovels snow in entryways and from sidewalks. Applies sand or salt to ice patches.
32. Maintains all janitorial equipment (i.e. brooms, mops, dust mops, etc.) in serviceable condition.
33. Maintains custodial supplies properly labeled.
34. Requests supplies when low.
35. Unloads and stores school supplies and other shipments of materials.
36. Assists in cafeteria during hot lunch (if assigned) and cleans cafeteria floors.
37. Keeps fire escapes and exits free of obstructions and snow; sands walkways.
38. Washes windows.
39. Cleans radiators, convectors, and univents.
40. Replaces filters in univents and air exchangers.
41. Provides necessary care of schoolyard and playground equipment. May assist in marking playing fields.
42. Mows and trims lawns if assigned.
43. Maintains janitor closets in clean and orderly manner.
44. Share in the general routine responsibilities of the school district as assigned by appropriate authority.
MISCELLANEOUS OBLIGATIONS:
1. Abstain from the use of intoxicating beverages or controlled substances prior to reporting and while on duty.
2. Maintain neat, clean, professional appearance.
3. Show consideration and courtesy toward school employees, students and visitors.
4. Maintain confidentiality about what is seen, heard, and told to you around school.
5. Discuss with supervisors any changes needed in work schedules and work-saving ideas to get the most done with the least effort.
6. Take any job problems to your supervisor. Refrain from discussion regarding work problems with the general public.
EVALUATION: Job performance evaluations will be conducted in accordance with Board
policy and administrative procedure.

This is a Temporary position (Employment to June 30th, 2025)
