Welcome! We are a small, rural elementary school serving around a 100 students from pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade in the Town of Sedgwick Maine. Sedgwick is a beautiful coastal community  just east of Penobscot Bay along the Eggemoggin Reach. Bordered by the towns of Brooklin, Penobscot, Blue Hill, Brooksville, and Little Deer Isle, Sedgwick is at the heart of the Blue hill Peninsula.

 

Our seasoned teachers create a positive learning environment through project based learning that focuses on science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). We prioritize social emotional learning and fostering an intimate classroom experience. We have extensive walking trails, an active garden/greenhouse program and after school activities.

 

We are looking for someone to join a dynamic team and make a positive impact on the lives of students with diverse learning needs. 

 

The Art Teacher will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art. Our school students have a strong foundation in STEAM activities.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history.  
  • Instruct students in citizenship and its relationship to art.
  • Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations, and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art. 
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting.  
  • Understand the versatility of acrylic paints: dry brushing, staining, layering, underpainting, monoprinting.
  • Understand a variety of “masters” techniques.  
  • Knows and can apply elements of design and modern principles of art.  
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.  
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.  
  • Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports.  
  • Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.  
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community.  
  • May sponsor exhibits from outside the school.  
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.  
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.  
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Administration.
  • Prepare and deliver daily lesson plans and instructional material for an average of 8-12 students in a small group setting.
  • Help students one-on-one if extra assistance is needed.
  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, and parents regarding student progress and student needs.
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.
  • Update daily attendance and create daily session reports for each student.
  • Collaborate with other educators, parents, and support staff to create a positive and inclusive learning environment. 
  • Monitor and assess student progress, adjusting instructional strategies accordingly. 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records. 

 

Requirements 

-Bachelor or Master’s degree in education

-Proven experience working with students with diverse learning needs.

-Strong communication and collaboration skills.

-Criminal History Record Check (CHRC)
