SUMMER CAMP DIRECTOR POSITION
Arundel, Maine

School Around Us (SAU) in Arundel, Maine has an opening for a summer camp director to join our team and support our community. This position is a 40 hour per week position from July 7th - August 15th with additional planning and preparation hours beginning in February and intermittent hours to close out the programming. SAU’s mission is to bring together young people, educators, families and our extended community to create a participatory, learner-driven environment grounded in meaningful relationships, which expresses the world we would like our children to live in—a world where all are supported to be self-aware and engaged global citizens.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Summer Camp Director is a flexible educator who values a collaborative educational environment that balances structure with spontaneity and freedom. This individual is responsible for creating an authentic atmosphere for our Summer Programming, designing weekly themes and activities that enrich the experience for children ages 4 to 10. The director will also ensure that the Summer Program is adequately staffed and will focus on building communication and relationships with our Summer Program families. KEY AREAS OF FOCUS

  • Program Philosophy: Uphold the SAU Summer Program philosophy. 
  • Pre-Summer Coordination: Work with SAU administrators from February to June to handle program promotions & registrations, staff hiring & training, and setup. 
  • Activity Planning: Lead and design engaging activities like arts and crafts, science, nature exploration, outdoor activities, role-playing, and group games. 
  • Educator Communication: Inform educators about their weekly responsibilities and prepare necessary materials. 
  • Program Structure: Establish the weekly tone and rhythm while remaining adaptable to participant needs. 
  • Parent Communication: Oversee all communication with parents during the summer. 
  • Safety and Conflict Resolution: Ensure adherence to program agreements and safety rules; lead conflict resolution as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience working with children ages 4-10 in summer camps and/or school-year programs.
  • At least three years of experience as a lead educator in an educational environment.
  • Proven ability to plan a variety of interactive activities.
  • Experience or interest in holistic education and child-led learning.
  • Comfort in a relaxed atmosphere, with the ability to adapt and respond to the interests and needs of the group.
  • Comfort and experience swimming with groups of children. Lifeguarding certification is a plus but not required.
  • A love for summer and the ability to cultivate a carefree, fun atmosphere for learners.
  • Skilled at taking charge when necessary.
  • Enjoy working outdoors, as that is our primary setting.
  • Ability to relate to young people with curiosity and respectful empathy.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative atmosphere.

 

HOURS/WEEK and SCHEDULE

40 hours/week throughout July 7-Aug. 15th

Some Pre and post summer program hours should be expected, beginning in February, yet a flexible schedule for those times is available.

COMPENSATION

$25/hour
