OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE:
To ensure that Multilingual Learners (MLs) qualifying for English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services based on the ACCESS for ELLs, receive appropriate language instruction leading to linguistic and academic achievement in all content areas, as well as social and cultural well-being.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and acceptance of cultural and linguistic differences in students.
- Excellent grasp of the grammatical, syntactical, and morphological structure of the English language.
- Ability to identify the needs of individual students and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of the students.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- High-level organizational skills.
- Proficiency with computer skills.
- Flexibility in working with various age levels and with changing schedules.
- Teach ML students the English language skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing according to their levels of proficiency.
- Teach ML students individually, in small pullout groups, or within the regular classroom setting.
- Assess students' language proficiency using the WIDA MODEL or Screener and the annual ACCESS for ELLs.
- Supervise, train, and assist ESOL Ed Techs in working with ML students.
- Collaborate with and assist classroom teachers with ML students.
- Complete all required records and reports.
- Set up Language Assessment Committee meetings to address students' needs.
- Provide advice and assistance to parents and families regarding available community services.
- Perform other tasks and assume responsibilities as may be assigned by the Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS and LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Maine State Teaching Certification (K-8) with Maine English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement (660)
- Minimum of three years of experience with English Language Learners preferred
