Assistant Professor of Chemistry POSITION OVERVIEW
The Corning School of Ocean Studies at Maine Maritime Academy invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. Applicants must hold a M.S. in Chemistry or other chemistry related field by August 2020, or have considerable experience teaching advanced chemistry concepts at the high school or undergraduate level. The successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace working with undergraduates in a classroom and laboratory setting. Teaching expectations include multiple lecture and laboratory sections for a General Chemistry undergraduate course for engineering majors as part of a service teaching agreement between the Engineering and Ocean Studies departments. It is preferred that the candidate have experience with engineering applications of chemistry. The Assistant Professor will oversee all aspects of this course, including preparing lectures, assignments, exams, and laboratory exercises, conferring with students on course materials, assisting in maintaining the chemistry laboratory, and promoting a culture of good chemical hygiene and safety. There is a possibility that the Assistant Professor could teach additional courses or electives dependent on the successful candidate’s area of expertise, or could engage in mentoring Ocean Studies undergraduates in research. TEACHING The successful candidate for this position will teach lecture and laboratory sections of a General Chemistry course for non-majors serving approximately 200 engineering students per academic year. The successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace working with undergraduate students in direct instruction in both classroom and laboratory settings. Responsibilities include preparing contemporary teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; developing, administering, and assessing written examinations and papers; revising or designing new laboratory exercises as needed; preparing laboratory exercises; working closely with the Lab Manager to track inventory and maintain a chemical stockroom; and practicing good chemical hygiene and a culture of laboratory safety.
SERVICE & SCHOLARSHIP Academy service includes, but is not limited to, service on the Faculty Senate and Academy and departmental committees. Student advising outside of the classroom is expected; this includes time spent meeting with students regarding academic, curricular, and career matters. Professional service implies the application of academic and professional expertise to serve your profession, the community, the state, the nation, or the world. Assistant Professors are expected to maintain and improve competence in subjects being taught by utilizing resources to improve pedagogy and professional networks. Scholarship (publications, presentations) is not required in this position, but opportunities for scholarship will be supported.
OTHER ASPECTS OF FACULTY PERFORMANCE Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the Academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public. Faculty are reviewed by their peers and department chairs periodically, and retention is based on the successful completion of teaching, service, and professional development metrics.
DUTIES • Teach at the undergraduate level in areas allocated by the Department Head. Teaching expectations include undergraduate courses and laboratories in General Chemistry for non- majors, and potentially additional courses dependent on the candidate’s area of expertise. • Develop learning materials, prepare assessments, and maintain records to monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance. • Inform students of their progress by promptly returning assignments, quizzes, papers, and exams. • Advise students in academic programs, and assist in departmental academic and administrative functions, including serving on departmental and campus-wide committees. • Optional, but encouraged to engage, advise, and mentor undergraduate Ocean Studies students in Ocean Studies’ Senior Research Prep and Senior Research course sequence. • Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high quality curriculum. • Participate in departmental and faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the department. • Maintain one’s own continuing professional development. • Maintain an awareness and observation of chemical, fire, health and safety regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in chemistry or other chemistry-related field (including oceanography or science education) by August, 2020 required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • PhD preferred. • Candidates with demonstrated teaching excellence, and commitment to either undergraduate education or advanced high school chemistry. • Experience in the application of chemical principles to the field of engineering, especially those in the maritime trades.
