School Counselor


Maine Central Institute is a town academy high school located in Pittsfield, Maine. Approximately 300 students attend MCI in grades 9-12. This number includes students from a variety of towns in the central Maine area along with students from other states and countries from around the world. More than 60 students live on campus in dormitories. MCI is looking for an experienced school counselor with exceptional writing, speaking, and listening skills. The school counselor will join a team of one other school counselor, a registrar, and the Dean of Academics.


Counselor Responsibilities include:

- Work for 10 days proceeding and 10 days following the school year, respectively, and is responsible for light email correspondence throughout the summer;

-Counseling approximately 50 seniors through the college application/workforce/military preparation process;
-Advise students with course selection, scheduling, developing 4-year academic plans and post-secondary planning for all students in assigned alpha group;
-Builds rapport and maintains regular contact with students on his/her/their caseload;

Participating in 504, IEP, and parent / teacher meetings to discuss academic needs and post-secondary planning;
-Working with other members of the Academic Office on a variety of projects, including coordinating on-site testing (e.g., PSAT, SAT, Maine Through Year, STAR, and various placement tests);

-Publicizing scholarship opportunities, coordinating student applications, coordinating rep visits, college fairs, transcript review days, and preparing materials necessary for internal and external selection processes;
-Coordinating parent and student events around topics such as financial aid, transitioning to MCI, and transitioning to college;

–Provides students with social & emotional support as needed; provides responsive crisis intervention, short-term counseling, and makes appropriate referrals to the school based clinical counselor and/or outside mental health service providers.


Requirements:
-A high level of proficiency with technology is essential, including the use of PowerSchool, Naviance and social media;
-Regular travel to college campuses and active participation in professional organizations such as ASCA(American School Counseling Association) and MeSCA(Maine School Counseling Association);
-Exemplary collaboration, communication and cooperation skills, as well as the ability to work independently and efficiently

-Possess a knowledge base of school counseling approaches and practices;

-Experience with the needs of high school age students and families;
-Experience in working with a multicultural student body of varying interests and abilities;

Education and Experience Requirements:
-The candidate must have a BA or BS degree; those with an MS in Counseling with a concentration in school counseling or MEd in School Counseling are preferred;

-Private/boarding school experience preferred
