Description

Old Town Elementary School is seeking a skilled, student-focused, and motivated applicant to serve students as the Upper Elementary School Counselor. This position will serve students starting in the fall of 2024.

OTES is a Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school with about 500 students enrolled. There is a strong culture of communication, collaboration, and cooperation among staff, students, and families. The school fosters student growth through unique and varied experiences for the students, strong instructional programming, and dedicated staff doing what’s best for students. The following expectations are part of this role:

  • Provides guidance instruction through planned units and activities in classrooms on a regularly scheduled basis.

  • Provides individual and small group guidance/counseling to address social and emotional concerns. 

  • Assists students in making transitions from one school/grade to another.

  • Productively consults with teachers, families, and administrators regarding needs of students.

  • Appropriately refers students to behavioral health specialists and other resources.

  • Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with those specialists and resources, as appropriate, on developing and implementing student supports.

  • Partner with staff to monitor and address attendance issues.

  • Is involved with district counselors to organize, develop, and evaluate the district’s comprehensive guidance plan.

  • Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events.

School Counselor Qualifications/Skills:

  • Desire and ability to work with students at the specified age level, with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals.

  • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines, communicate effectively with students, families, school administrators and other staff, and exercise the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive and confidential.

  • Knowledge of technology platforms to support communication with staff and families.

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work

  • Minimum of 1 year of school counseling or teaching experience

  • Understanding and familiarity with computer applications and word processing functions.

Certification:  Current Maine School Counselor Certification (075). (if not yet fully certified, please include your plan for conditional and full certification)
