HiSET®/Adult Basic Education Instructor at Knox County Jail

Part-Time, Year-Round Position

RSU 13 Adult and Community Education is seeking a qualified Instructor to staff the education program at Knox County Jail (KCJ). This position works in collaboration with the KCJ staff to provide educational support services with priority placed on the preparation and testing for the HiSET® high school equivalency diploma. Instructor supports various other topics that may include: resume writing, career exploration, personal growth and development, reading clubs, arts, college prep instruction, financial literacy, and supporting other education programs.

Schedule: Coordinated in accordance with KCJ and student needs. Up to 24 hours weekly.

Compensation: Hourly rate starting at $25/hour

Qualifications:

  • Maine DOE Adult Education Certification Endorsement or valid conditional cert. in one of the HiSET® Content Areas:  English 100, Social Studies 200, Mathematics 300, Physical Science 350, or Life Science 395.
  • Ability to offer instruction in each of the five HiSET® content areas in alignment with CCR standards.
  • Maine Department of Education Criminal History Records Check and KCJ security clearance protocol.
  • Experience working with adult learners and/or in a correctional facility preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and proficiency in common technologies.

Reporting & Supports: Instructor reports to the RSU 13 Adult Ed Director, and manages the administrative intake forms, CASAS testing, attendance, and data reporting needs required by the Maine DOE. Regular staff meetings with the full RSU 13 Adult Ed teaching staff and admin offer ongoing support and communications.

Approach: KCJ education programs are “Client Centered” and endeavor to address the unique needs and interests of the students. KCJ understands that the needs of the learners are varied and should address the “Whole Person.”  Opportunities for community engagement and other local resources are offered. Instruction is self-paced which empowers learners to be the catalyst of change in their own development and education.
