Director of Maintenance and Facilities

Job Goal/Primary Purpose:

To oversee the operations of the buildings and facilities for the Saco School Department to provide students, employees and the community with a safe, secure, clean and comfortable environment in which to learn, play, and work.

Minimum Qualifications:

Including Training, Education, & Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of college or trade school in related field, four year degree preferred.
  • Valid State of Maine Criminal History Records Check approval.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups, including parents, and various school and department staff.
  • Ability to provide leadership and supervise personnel in accordance with district policy, and state and federal mandates.
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory or management experience with prior experience in the areas of planning and maintaining physical plants preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the basic principles of construction, maintenance, safety and security pertaining to school facilities.
  • Knowledge of proper handling of hazardous materials including asbestos management and maintaining Safety and Material Safety Data Sheets and environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of all the heating and cooling systems.

Essential Functions (Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities):

  1. Management and Supervision
  • Manage and supervise Maintenance programs and staff.
  • Screen, select, train, assign and discipline custodial personnel.
  • Maintain positive and effective communication with school personnel and students.
  • Responsible for mandatory OSHA safety training for all department staff and annual evaluations of custodial staff.
  • Maintain evaluation and training records pertaining to staff.
  • Monitor time sheets of Custodial staff.
  • Responsible for emergency calls pertaining to buildings and transportation.
  • Maintain safety standards to conform to state and insurance regulations.
  1. Maintenance
  • Oversee schedules and procedures for the regular, ongoing custodial and maintenance care of all buildings.
  • Inspect buildings on a regular basis for needed maintenance and repair to determine that high standards of workmanship, cleanliness, safety and security are maintained.
  • Establish and recommend priorities on repair projects.
  1. Budget
  • Prepare and submit Maintenance budget, including detailed record keeping for capital improvement projects and capital maintenance projects.
  • Reviews budget periodically with Superintendent and/or Finance Director.
  • Supervise the purchase, maintenance, financial planning and budget for all functions related to building upkeep and long term care.
  1. Other
  • Participate in meetings as required by the Board, Superintendent, Principals and parents in reference to facilities maintenance.
  • Sit on applicable committees as required.
  • Undertake other duties as requested by the Superintendent.
  • Utilize technology effectively to streamline communication and operations.
