Thornton Academy Upper School Special Education Teacher

Nature of the Position:

The Special Education teacher is responsible for developing programming for students with mild to moderate disabilities. A strong knowledge of inclusive practices and transition is preferred. The chosen candidate will work with regular education teachers, educational technicians and related service providers in developing students' academic, functional, and social emotional skills within the special education and mainstream classroom environments. As case manager, the special education teacher also completes necessary paperwork to reflect student needs and consults with teachers to support students’ access to the general education curriculum.

Performance Responsibilities:

Tasks for this position include but are not limited to:

-Planning and preparing appropriate lessons and activities aligned with IEP goals and objectives and in support of student transition goals

-Consultation with mainstream teachers to support inclusion in the broader school community

-Completing necessary special education paperwork and assessments within the specified timelines

-Regular communication with parents and colleagues to support student progress

-Implementing behavior management strategies that foster a classroom climate conducive to learning and engagement, including development of individualized PBSPs.

-Collecting and using data to measure student progress and inform programming needs -Directing daily activities of support staff

Qualifications:

Valid Maine Certification 282 or 286
Experience working in special education at the secondary level preferred
