South Portland High School is looking for a high school band director who is passionate about music and teaching. Qualified candidates must be able to: deliver a comprehensive instrumental music education program that fosters student growth in musical skill, performance, discipline, and appreciation; cultivate a strong, inclusive band culture that supports school spirit and community engagement; and maintain high standards of excellence in musicianship and student character.
Job description specifics:
*Instructional Planning and Delivery:
-Develops and implements lesson plans aligned with the national standards
-Provides individualized and group instruction to accommodate diverse learning needs and instrumental proficiency levels
-Plans and conducts rehearsals that promote student engagement, ensemble skills, and musical literacy
-Selects appropriate, challenging, and diverse musical repertoire for performance
-Integrates music theory, history, and appreciation into the instructional program
-Prepares students for and organizes public performances, festivals, concerts, and community events
*Classroom and Rehearsal Environment:
-Establishes and maintains a structured, respectful, and inclusive rehearsal/classroom environment
-Develops student leadership and fosters pride and responsibility within the ensemble
-Maintains accurate attendance and performance records, including instrument inventories and student progress
-Establishes an equitable learning environment where all students feel safe, valued, and empowered to express themselves.
-Collaborates with colleagues and administration to support school-wide PBIS initiatives and contribute to a respectful, supportive school climate.
*Ensemble and Program Leadership:
-Supports marching band, concert band, and other ensembles as assigned
-Coordinates and oversees participation in parades, competitions, and seasonal concerts
-Oversees instrument maintenance, inventory, and repair needs
-Works with the South Portland Music Boosters and community partners to support the band program
*Additional Responsibilities
-Maintains regular communication with families regarding student progress, events, and expectations, encouraging family and community partnerships
-Collaborate with colleagues and form positive relationships with other staff members, including working with the middle school band directors to promote the high school band program.
Valid Teaching Certification and Endorsement or Equivalent required; Administrative Certification strongly preferred
Successful experience working in an educational leadership role required.
