POSITION: Anticipated Interim Director of Special Services, to start July 1, 2025

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Wells-Ogunquit Community School District seeks an Interim Director of Special Services with five years' experience in special education leadership with a passion for the education of all students who will use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to develop, deliver and maintain appropriate special services programs for all students in need of specially designed instruction; and to oversee Section 504 and McKinney Vento needs.

Possess or be eligible for Maine Department of Education Administrator of Special Education (Endorsement 030) and Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) Certification

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Contributes to the development of the total district philosophy of education.
  2. Assists in the adaptation of district policies to include special services needs.
  3. Recommends policies and program essential to the needs of exceptional children.
  4. Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing special services.
  5. Provides leadership in establishing new programs and developing improved understanding of existing programs.
  6. Supervises and coordinates special services classroom programs.
  7. Evaluates existing programs as an ongoing responsibility, and recommends changes and additions as needed.
  8. Establishes procedures for placement, evaluation, assignment, and reappraisal of students with regard to the special services program.
  9. Develops procedures for referral, securing reports, psychological examination, and placement.
  10. Supervises and coordinates instruction for homebound or hospitalized students.
  11. Assume responsibility for supervision of all assigned administrative, certified, and support staff.
  12. Assists in recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of special services personnel.
  13. Assumes responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents legally required or administratively useful.
  14. Supervises preparation of attendance reports and similar data necessary to reimbursement of funds, collecting of tuition for out-of-district students, and similar fiscal matters.
  15. Assists in arranging for transportation of all children placed in special services classes.
  16. Develops budget recommendations and provides expenditure control on established budgets for special services.
  17. Interprets the objectives and programs of the special services to the School Committee, the administration, the staff, and the public at large.
  18. Maintains a permanent inventory of equipment purchased for special services.
  19. Establishes procedures for requisitioning, ordering, and paying for special services equipment and supplies.
  20. Approves all supplies, materials, and texts used by special services personnel.
  21. Evaluates on an ongoing basis, the total special services program, curriculum, procedures, and individual students’ needs and achievements.
  22. Makes recommendations on design, furnishings, equipment, and location of new special services facilities.
  23. Provides programs of a remedial nature to supplement regular classroom instruction for those students with special needs as appropriate.
  24. Consults with parents of students enrolled in the program.
  25. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development; for keeping current with literature, new research findings, and improved techniques; and for attending professional meetings and conventions as appropriate.
  26. Participates in the planning and implementation of staff development for special services personnel.
