Job Goals: The school nurse is a registered professional nurse working in the school setting who strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventative health, health assessment and referral procedures.

Necessary Skills/Qualifications:
- RN (registered nurse), graduate of an accredited school of nursing and holds a current license form the Maine State Board of Nursing; BSN preferred
- Three years of nursing experience is preferred, with at least one year as a school nurse
- Eligible for state certification as a school nurse
- Evidence of ability to provide health related educational leadership and administer educational, preventative and remedial health care programs

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provide health assessments
- Develops and implements health plans
- Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate the individual needs of students
- Participates as the health specialist on the child educational evaluation team to evaluate the health individualized education plan (I.E.P.)
- Plans and implements school health management protocols for children with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication
- Participates in home visits to assess family’s needs as related to a student’s health; acts as liaison between school, home and community
- Develops procedures and provides crises intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventative immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases
- Recommends provides for a school environment conducive to learning
- Provides information on health
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison between school, home and community
- Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers
- Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices
- Assists in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school unit
- Is responsible for maintaining and updating cumulative health records
- Helps develop/revise school health policies, procedures, standings orders and implements the school medication policy and procedures
- Prepares the budget for school health supplies
- Reviews, revises and implements emergency policies, including in-service health and safety programs for personnel
- Prepares first aid kits for each building
- Organizes, instructs and supervises school health volunteers or assistants
- Reports regularly to the principal and superintendent on school health activities as needed
- Prepares statistical reports for the Dept. of Education and the Dept. of Health & Human Services as required
- Interprets school health services for school personnel
- Interprets appraisal findings and helps students and parents accept responsibility for diagnosis and treatment
- Encourages parents to maintain current immunization protection as recommended by the Dept. of Health & Human Services
- Helps school personnel recognize departures from appropriate behavior and growth patterns; helps students and staff adjust student programs when necessary to accommodate health needs of students

Terms of Employment:
This is a school year position; salary is based on the appropriate RN step outlined in Article A – Salary Schedule of the Sanford Federation of Teachers contract. |
