NATURE OF POSITION:
The Custodian has primary responsibility for providing a clean and safe environment in which faculty and students may both teach and learn. This is accomplished through the direct application of cleaning practices to floor, window, and wall surfaces. The position is required to use cleaning equipment as well as snowblowers. The position utilizes chemical cleaning products on surfaces. The Custodian may assist in school kitchens, with delivery and storage of supplies, and with minor repairs. The position has responsibility for security of the building and maintenance of the building exterior and grounds. The Custodian reports to the Facility Manager and may receive instructions from the building administrator.
DUTIES OF POSITION: (examples only)
Keeps all floors and carpeting in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation
Sets up rooms and common areas for meals, meetings and special school functions, returning to original condition and cleaning after use
Removes trash from buildings and grounds and properly disposes of it
Cleans and keeps in a sanitary condition all assigned areas of the schools
Performs minor repair work including changing light bulbs, fixing pencil sharpeners and other small appliances and fixing desks and tables
Shovels snow from all entrances, stairs and ramps, salts and sands as needed
Cleans the exterior entrance and exit areas of the buildings
Cleans interior and exterior windows
Utilizes safety procedures to clean up spilled bodily fluids resulting from illnesses, injuries and minor accidents
Cleans walls to remove marks, may repaint walls as necessary
May deliver school and/or food service supplies within the building or between buildings
Checks, as assigned, door locks, windows, and rooms to assure that the buildings are secured and that lights are turned off
Reports promptly to Facility Manager any conditions needing major repair
May assist in the school kitchens, cleaning kitchens, operating dishwasher, cleaning kitchen appliances, and storing supplies
Operates cleaning equipment to buff and wax floors, vacuum rugs; snowblower; and hand tools
Performs other assigned duties on an as-needed basis
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of cleaning products and their use
Knowledge of commercial cleaning practices
Knowledge of basic carpentry, and painting
Knowledge of health and safety practices
Knowledge of safe methods of handling bodily fluids
Skill in operating cleaning equipment, snowblowers, and hand tools
Ability to maintain cleaning equipment
Ability to work independently
Ability to perform work that requires regular stooping, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling of medium to heavy weights
Ability to receive, understand and carry out instructions
Ability to work effectively with students, staff, administrators and the public
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education in a vocational/technical program is desirable.
Training in commercial cleaning practices. Experience in a custodial/janitorial position involving working independently.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Work year - 52 weeks
This is currently a part time position 2PM-6PM. We do have some flexibility with the schedule but after 2PM is needed.
