High School Special Education Teacher, Threshold program, 2024-2025

The Maine Academy of Natural Sciences is looking for an experienced and innovative teacher
who enjoys working with non-traditional learners in a hands-on, project based, highly
individualized environment. The Threshold Special Education teacher will work with 8 students
in all content areas required for High School graduation. This teacher will also act as Case
Manager for all Threshold students who have an IEP. On average this is a total of 10 - 13
students with IEPs. Candidates must be flexible, possess excellent communication skills, and
the ability to work well in a team.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Travel to face-to-face instructional sessions with each student on a weekly basis
- Maintain daily contact with each of the 8 students on school days, including possible
video chat, phone calls, texts or emails to answer questions, confirm attendance, and
productivity
- Develop projects and assignments integrated across content areas to meet the individual
needs of our Threshold students. This will include place-based projects as well as the
monthly on campus learning days which focus on environmental sustainability and
agriculture
- Plan for and work with students who may have a range of literacy deficits or needs.
- Use assessment tools that measure student academic growth in a method which is
congruent with how they learn
- Administer and interpret results from NWEA, accuplacer, and other standardized
assessments 2 times/year
- Support students who are interested in dual enrollment with a Community College
- Contact parents/guardians on a regular basis to keep them updated on student progress
in the program
- Write quarterly progress reports for advisees
- Schedule and attend IEP meetings as needed
- Improve skills by attending professional development opportunities as appropriate
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of students and
their families
Qualifications:
- The successful candidate will hold or be eligible for Maine State Certification in
Special Education
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in special education at the high
school level, knowledge of special education processes, a passion for working with
at-risk students, and demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
- Hold a valid Maine Driver’s License

This candidate will work closely with our Special Education director, as well as the Dean of
Threshold.
