Elementary - Special Education Teacher, Functional Life Skills 

The Brewer School Department is seeking to fill a full time special education teacher position to oversee the Life Skills program, serving elementary students. This position is uniquely supported by a seasoned group of paraprofessionals, as well as a full time BCBA, Psychologist, and an IEP Coordinator to assist with routine case management / IDEA requirements. The structure of special education duties is designed to promote and protect instructional time for student achievement. A desirable candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • State of Maine Special Education Certification (282 or 286/working toward) and Criminal History Record Check
  • Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities
  • Experience planning and teaching functional academics, social skills, and life skills curriculum
  • Experience designing and implementing positive behavior intervention plans and to be fully certified in a State Approved Crisis Prevention program (i.e., Safety Care).
  • Experience supporting student transitions across grade levels
  • Experience coordinating and supervising paraprofessionals and managing multiple schedules of related services
  • Experience integrating technology / adapted technology into instruction to meet various student needs
  • Ability to administer standardized, curriculum-based, and alternative assessments as required by MDOE
  • Ability to analyze assessment and performance data to design appropriate instruction
  • Ability to plan instruction to align with IEP goals, targeted standards, and least restrictive learning opportunities
  • Ability to support outreach activities and relations, such as special olympics events and other community outings aligned with the life skills curriculum and activities of daily living.
  • Ability to lead and facilitate IEP meetings and complete necessary special education paperwork
  • Knowledge of state and federal special education regulations and IEP procedures
  • Excellent communication, time management, organization, and leadership skills
  • Flexible, positive, and collaborative team member
