DESCRIPTION:
This is paraprofessional support work in providing instructional assistance for a professional teacher instructing students in a classroom or alternative educational setting. Responsibilities include introducing new learning to students preplanned in collaboration with the teacher, providing short-term instruction, conducting one-on-one or small groups, and managing classroom activities. Instructional work is performed under direct and indirect supervision. Non-instructional work is performed under general administrative supervision.
REPRESENTATIVE TASKS: (A position may not be assigned all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be assigned).

Reviews and studies curriculum areas and preplans in order to introduce new learning material to students in collaboration with the teacher.

Performs short-term instruction under direct supervision of the teacher in order to effectively increase student learning.

Performs classroom management activities under direct supervision of the teacher in order to enhance the teacher’s effectiveness and learning environment.

Conducts one-on-one or small groups under indirect professional supervision in order to reinforce teacher instruction.

Maintains data on lessons taught in order to comply with prescribed documentation requirements and procedures.

Follows behavior management plans consistently and accurately in order to comply with specified modification methods.

Motivates students to do well in academic subjects in order to assist in completing educational requirements.

Moves, lifts and assists with toileting and feeding of severely disabled students when required in order to meet functional life needs of students.

Assists with cafeteria, playground, bus and other related duties in order to meet non-instructional needs of students.

Communicates with teacher and others as appropriate in order to inform them of student performance and behavior.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: (These are required to successfully perform the work assigned).

Knowledge of student behavior management techniques and intervention strategies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two (2) years of post secondary education or a combination equivalent to sixty (60) hours of approved study in an educationally related field – OR – for vocational education, two (2) years of paid applied employment within the field of assignment.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).
