Title: Food Service Kitchen Manager - Shapleigh Memorial
Reports to: School Nutrition Director
Position Summary: Responsible for coordinating and supervising the day to day functions of the school kitchen to ensure a smooth and efficient operation
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- ServSafe Certification (within the first 6 months of employment)
- Prior relevant experience (preferred)
- Maine Department of Education Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) or ability to attain
Skills/Abilities:
- Advanced math, reading and communication skills
- Advanced computer skills with the ability to learn various computer programs
- Ability to safely use all necessary kitchen equipment
- Advanced knowledge of weight scales and measurements
- Ability to read, follow and convert a recipe
- Ability to manage staff and foster a positive work environment
- Ability to handle high stress situations with professionalism
- Ability to learn and follow all federal, state and local rules/regulations in relation to the School Nutrition Program
General Responsibilities
- Consults with the School Nutrition Office when questions arise
- Works with administration on building related issues or concerns
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality in relation to students and staff
- Provides effective communication in a timely and appropriate manner
- Flexibility in learning and executing new skills and concepts
- Adapts to a variety of assignments and working conditions
- Identifies and resolves issues or conflicts with a positive temperament
- Maintains a daily/weekly employee timesheet
- Adheres to all district policies and procedures
Hiring, Training, Supervising and Evaluating Employees
- Assists with the hiring process for new staff
- Plans kitchen schedule for efficient food production
- Assigns daily duties evenly amongst staff
- Evaluates employees fairly and honestly
- Maintains a positive and productive working environment
- Provides training to staff on all aspects of their daily duties including the computerized accountability system
Sanitation and Safety
- Follows all local and state health regulations and is responsible for the security and safety of all food and supplies
- Ensures that all staff are abiding by RSU 57 Standard Operating Procedures
- Maintains clean and organized food preparation and storage areas
- Supervises the operation of all equipment for proper use and safety
- Reports all injuries and equipment malfunctions immediately to the School Nutrition Office
- Maintains a valid ServSafe Certificate
Food Production and Meal Service
- Forecasts accurate amounts of menu items to ensure all students are offered the daily menu choices with limited waste
- Supervises all food preparation ensuring that menu items are prepared and available according to daily production records
- Utilizes leftovers effectively and safely when appropriate
- Supervises and assists staff with food preparation, serving, cooking, and baking
- Monitors and maintains consistency, quality and safety of food throughout meal service
- Supervises and assists during meal service to ensure all federal and state reimbursable meal requirements are met
- Provides excellent customer service to students and staff
- Supervises and assists in cleaning the kitchen and serving areas
- Completes and submits all required paperwork to the School Nutrition Office
- Maintains accurate daily/weekly cash sheets and bank deposits
Food Orders, Deliveries, and Inventories
- Submits prompt and accurate orders to vendors and School Nutrition Office
- Maintains an adequate inventory of food and supplies
- Supervises the check in of deliveries and reports any missing or damaged items to the School Nutrition Office
- Submits an accurate monthly inventory
Professional Development
- Meets annual professional development requirements
- Attends manager meetings and holds team meetings upon return
- Monitors and assists staff with meeting professional development requirements

The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, climb stairs, lift (ranging from 25-75 lbs), bend, pull, push, walk, kneel, crouch, and perform other physical tasks that may be required from time to time. The employee must have the ability to stand for periods as long as 6 hours or more on a cement/tile kitchen floor. The employee must have the ability to work in a hot, humid environment.
Terms of Employment: Hourly, work year and working conditions to be established by the RSU 57 School Board.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation.
