ABOUT SPRUCE MOUNTAIN ADULT EDUCATION: 

Spruce Mountain Adult & Community Education serves adult learners across western Maine, providing academic, areer, college prep, and workforce training programs aligned with regional labor needs.  Our CDL program will be designed to prepare adults for immediate entry into high-demand careers while meeting all state and federal training requirements. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This position is responsible for providing quality instruction and assessment to students enrolled in the new Spruce Mountain Adult Education Commercial Driver’s Training classes taught through our Adult Education Workforce Training program.  In addition to teaching, this individual will assist in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of the Commercial Driver Training program.  The CDL instructor must understand the comprehensive role of adult education and workforce training, and work collaboratively with all adult education staff, students, and workforce partners.  In this position, the CDL Class A Instructor motivates and prepares adult learners to successfully obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and enter the workforce as safe, skilled, and employable commercial drivers.  The instructor provides classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction aligned with DOT, FMCSA, and State of Maine requirements. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Provides quality learning experiences for all students in accordance with their needs and abilities.  The course will include classroom theory, hands-on and online training, in addition to driving time, while maintaining the basic integrity of the CDL courses standards and objectives. 
  • States clear objectives and criteria in the course syllabus and evaluates students’ performance
  • Maintains confidentiality related to student records, performance, and communications
  • Keeps an accurate inventory of all assigned equipment and supplies
  • Maintains records of maintenance and repair of all equipment
  • Submits syllabi, student evaluations, grades, and other required information to the Director in a timely manner
  • Assists in generating reports to various regulatory entities, including our grant funders, and provides notification of any significant programmatic changes
  • Ensures the program operates in accordance with all local policies and procedures, OSHA, Hazardous Communication, FERPA, state law and applicable standards
  • Collaborates with the Director and Workforce Coordinator to align program operations, budget, and resources with program and grant initiatives
  • Develops and maintains the program’s operational, student, compliance, and assessment records in accordance with procedures / policy 
  • Works collaboratively with community agencies, business, industry partners, program stakeholders, and other adult education programs
  • Reports any and all safety concerns, incidents, and / or emergencies to the required entities 
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned

Instructors may be asked to work more or less than the above hours depending on workload and schedule.  Must be able to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Five years of Class A CDL experience
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Maine Class A CDL License with endorsements (Hazardous Materials and Tanker endorsement or able to attain)
  • Must certify that they were never disqualified from operating a commercial motor vehicle
  • Possess strong computer skills
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screening and be able to participate in random drug screenings per state and federal regulations
