Seeking Two Dedicated Special Educators

Join the Team at Mount Desert Elementary School!

Are you a passionate educator committed to the belief that every child can thrive? Mount Desert Elementary School (MDES) is seeking two Special Education Teachers to join our collaborative, rural community. We are a Pre-K through 8th-grade school that prioritizes Safety, Respect, Responsibility, and Perseverance in everything we do.

Why Choose MDES?

At MDES, we don't just "do" school; we build a community of collective efficacy. Our strengths include:

Robust MTSS Framework: We utilize a sophisticated Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) that views behavior as communication and treats misbehavior as a "lagging skill" requiring instruction rather than just punishment.

High-Impact Teaching (HIT): Our educators are guided by the HIT Framework, focusing on equity, classroom culture, and student-centered instruction.

A Collaborative Ecosystem: You will work alongside a full support team, including a Special Education Secretary, OT, PT, School Psychologist, School Social Worker, Behavior Interventionist and a team of skilled and experienced Ed Techs.

The Positions

We are looking to fill two roles focused on IEP case management, the design, delivery, and monitoring of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), and consultation with our multidisciplinary team of specialists.

Position 1: Special Education Teacher (Certification 282 required).

Position 2: Special Education Teacher (Certification 282 required; 282b endorsement preferred).

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Holds (or is eligible for) Maine Department of Education Certification 282.
  • Embraces a Growth Mindset: Maintains a belief in the potential of every student.
  • Is a Team Player: Works in a collegial manner with parents as partners to support student success.
  • Values Professional Growth: Engages in school-led initiatives such as restorative response to challenging behavior and research-based, high-impact best practices.
  • Possesses Professional Integrity: Adheres to federal and state special education laws which govern our disciplinary and instructional processes.

To apply, scan cover letter, resume, transcripts, Maine State Certification, 3 letters of recommendation, and completed teaching application (found at www.mdirss.org) as a single PDF attachment and send it to hiring@mdirss.org.

Become part of a district where "every child thrives one conversation at a time."
