Special Education – Middle School Life Skills Classroom Teacher 


Ellsworth School Department is seeking a dynamic, knowledgeable candidate who is a self-starting, team-oriented person looking to become part of a collaborative staff working together to meet the individual needs of students. Strong leadership skills, organizational skills, collaboration skills and the ability to be flexible, to multitask, to case manage students and to think quickly are required to carry out the duties of this job.  The Special Education Teacher for the middle school level promotes and develops successful learning for students who are eligible for IDEA services, manages an assigned caseload, maintains regular communication with those students, their parents, and appropriate staff members and is responsible for development, revision and implementation of IEP’s and 504 plans. The candidate should have experience in:

  • Discrete Trial Instruction, Assistive and Augmentative Communication Devices, PECS programs
  • Authoring behavior plans and functional behavior assessments
  • Determining a child’s level of functioning and expresses that in a summary of evaluation results and diagnostic impressions within evaluation reports provided to teams and parents 
  • Developing goals based upon formal and informal assessment results. 
  • Communicating with school staff, community providers and families
  • Working knowledge of child development, severe/profound needs, developmental disabilities, family systems, and special education.
  • Establishing an effective rapport/relationship with children, parents and a wide variety of providers
  • Maintaining composure in stressful situations
  • Adapting techniques to varying personalities and environments
  • Facilitating team processes including problem solving and pre-referral interventions
  • Collecting appropriate student performance data for determining the extent to which student IEP goals and objectives are achieved
  • Collaborating with the Behavior Interventionist

The ideal candidate is caring, compassionate, dedicated to the students’ success and is an effective student advocate, communicator, collaborator and flexible multi-tasker. The candidate needs a versatile skill set and a willingness to proactively look for ways to support the student.
