Adapted Physical Education Teacher K-12 – Special Services

Job Summary: This position is responsible for instructing students with disabilities in a program of adapted physical education. Position positively motivates the student to develop appropriate skills, attitudes, and knowledge; utilizes a variety of instructional techniques appropriate to students’ abilities; and creates a safe and orderly learning environment.

  • Develop individual physical education lessons appropriate for students of varying age and functioning levels.
  • Develop long and short term learning goals and objectives according to program guidelines, the IEP and abilities of each assigned student.
  • Utilize a variety of techniques and materials to instruct students in adapted physical education (to include swimming instruction).
  • Assist students with developing healthy lifestyle behaviors and social skills and an appreciation of the importance of wellness.
  • Establish and maintains standards of pupil behavior and create a safe, orderly, and effective learning environment.
  • Interpret the abilities and disabilities of students and work cooperatively with classroom teachers.
  • Monitor student performance and progress, adjusting instruction as necessary.
  • Evaluate student performance, social growth and prepare regular progress reports
  • Maintain thorough records for each student.  
  • Participate as part of multi-disciplinary team.
  • Conference regularly with parents/guardians regarding improvement and maintenance of physical activity and the performance of students.
  • Keeps abreast of developments and research in the field of adapted physical education and employee wellness.
  • Attend staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
  • Assume other duties and special projects as assigned by appropriate administrator.


  • Maine Department of Education Certification in Adapted Physical Education (515) preferred. (Minimum Physical Education 510 certification required)
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Certification in adapted aquatics preferred
  • CPR/AED and first aide certification preferred
  • Three years of teaching experience preferred designing programs for physically restricted/mentally challenged students preferred.
  • Excellent organizational & communication skills, the ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, employees, parents, & students.
  • Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.
  • Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Valid Driver’s License
