Director of Human Resources

Position Overview

This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for the human resource functions of the school including workplace culture, HR compliance, professional development, compensation, benefits, Worker's Compensation, Unemployment, and personnel policies and procedures.  The role is a member of the Business Office staff. 

The Director of Human Resources is both a hands-on and leadership role. The Director will foster an inclusive environment focused on best practices supporting employee engagement, talent acquisition, new hire orientations, payroll and benefits administration among other duties. The position requires attention to detail, the ability to work in a group as well as independently, and strict adherence to deadlines. The ability to handle multiple priorities is essential. Knowledge of applicable personnel laws and regulations and benefits administration is required.   

The following responsibilities of this position, include, but are not limited: 

  • Collaborate with key members of the community including administrators, faculty, and staff to support a culture of educational excellence, employee engagement, and workplace satisfaction. 
  • Annual review of the employee Handbook inclusive of making recommendations on best practices regarding HR policies, procedures, benefits.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Head of School on HR-related matters. 
  • Primary contact for all employee issues and conflict resolution, including investigations, monitoring from origin to conclusion. 
  • Build and implement an effective recruitment strategy to attract top talent.
  • Direct and oversee hiring, orientations, trainings, and terminations in coordination with the Head of School and CFO.
  • Maintain and update job descriptions for all employees as needed, including periodic job description audit and employee classification as appropriate under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Oversee annual employee work agreements in coordination with the CFO. 
  • Ensure compliance and training with federal and state statutes.
  • Manage programs and trainings for FMLA, ADA, sexual harassment, workers compensation, ERISA, IRS, HIPPA, Privacy, disability and unemployment insurance.
  • Oversee DOT exams and random drug testing for bus drivers.
  • Participate in annual 403(b) and Operating Audit as needed.
  • Maintain all personnel records and legal compliance.

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Serve as the primary contact for all employees for payroll and benefit questions and claims support.
  • Work in collaboration with Controller to facilitate weekly and semi-monthly payroll.
  • Manage Workers' Compensation, FMLA, Short and Long-Term Disability, ME PFML, I-9’s, W-4’s and Unemployment claims.
  • Manage and oversee employee wellness programs.
  • Manage annual benefits renewal in coordination with the CFO.

Other

  • Assist with preparation of government filings as needed.
  • Assist with external reporting, surveys as required.
  • Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization.
  • Manage the DOE NEO staff list.
  • Support the work of the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Serve on the Student Activities Duties Team 4 weekends per year.
  • Other tasks as assigned or needed.

Qualifications

  • Must have the ability to meet the physical demands of sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time at a desk computer workstation, and using repetitive arm and finger movements as required for computer input. 
  • Must have the ability to work in a semi-open office setting with frequent in-person interaction and numerous interruptions.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple projects at one time and to set priorities as needed.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have the ability to travel to appropriate training events. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in human resources.
  • SHRM certification preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and payroll platforms.
